Alright, you guys asked for it… here it is. The Farmer’s Dog review you wanted after my last post. And before anyone gets defensive, let me just say this: I am not here to food shame. A fed dog is a happy dog, period. If your dog is thriving on The Farmer’s Dog, fantastic! I’ve just gotten a lot of requests to talk about it, and as someone who has certifications, is working toward a bachelor’s degree in Animal Health, and has pretty much dedicated my life to studying canine nutrition and systems… well, you know I’m going to give it to you straight.
The Farmer’s Dog is… fine. Pretty decent ingredients, no mystery fillers, and definitely a step up from a lot of what’s on store shelves. I’ll give them that. But there are a couple of things that make me roll my eyes.
First, where’s the fish? A fish-based option would be amazing; not only is it a fantastic protein source, but it’s rich in omega-3s, great for skin and coat health, and perfect for dogs who can’t do the usual chicken-beef-turkey rotation. Right now, you’re basically stuck with four proteins: beef, chicken, turkey, and pork. And this isn’t just a “meh, I want variety” complaint, protein rotation is important for nutrient diversity and avoiding food sensitivities long-term.
Second, and this is an issue I have with most “fresh” foods: the protein selection is super limited. Which means if your dog has allergies or you like to rotate proteins, you’re out of luck unless you want to mix in other foods on your own.
And now for my favorite part- their “formulated for your dog” claim. Let’s be real. It is not actually formulated specifically for your dog. What they do is take one of their standard recipes, weigh out the portion based on your dog’s size and activity level, seal it up, and slap a label on it with your dog’s name. Is it convenient? Sure. Is it some custom, made-just-for-your-pup, groundbreaking nutritional magic? No. It’s glorified portion control with cute packaging.
Bottom line: The Farmers Dog is a decent choice if it works for your budget and your dogs’ needs. I just wish it were cheaper, had more protein options, and higher protein in general.
