Let's Talk About Your Pups Seasonal Allergies

If your dog turns into a sneezy, itchy, paw-licking mess every time the seasons change… welcome to the club... And before you automatically reach for the same old quick fixes, let’s talk about something a little more foundational: Bovine Colostrum.
Colostrum is basically the OG superfood. It’s the first milk produced after birth, and it’s loaded with immunoglobulins, growth factors, and compounds that help regulate the immune system. That’s the keyword here: regulate. Seasonal allergies aren’t just “bad luck,” they’re your dog’s immune system overreacting to things like pollen, grass, or mold. When I use bovine colostrum with my dogs, the goal isn’t just to mask symptoms; it’s to help calm that dramatic immune response so their bodies stop acting like pollen is a personal attack (they're doxies. They're already dramatic, we don't need to give them a reason to overreact more).
What have I personally seen? Less itching, less tear stains/watering eyes, less redness, and way less obsessive paw licking during peak allergy seasons. It’s not an overnight miracle (and if anyone tells you it is… run), but with consistent use, it can make a noticeable difference... and the best part? It supports gut health, too, which is huge because a large chunk of the immune system lives there. Fix the gut, and you’re already ahead of the game!
Now, before you start thinking this sounds a lot like what we talked about with collagen last week… let’s clear that up real quick.
Colostrum and collagen are not interchangeable, even though they both get thrown into the “wellness supplement” bucket. Collagen is all about structure. Think joints, skin, coat, connective tissue. It provides amino acids that help maintain and rebuild the physical body. Amazing for mobility, aging dogs, or that shiny coat we all love.
Colostrum, on the other hand, is more about communication. It tells the immune system when to chill out and when to step up. It’s working behind the scenes on immune balance, gut integrity, and inflammation control, not just building tissue.
So while collagen is your go-to for “let’s support the body,” colostrum is your go-to for “let’s support the immune system and calm the chaos.”
Could a dog benefit from both? Absolutely. But they’re playing completely different roles, and understanding that is where the magic happens. Because throwing random supplements at your dog and hoping for the best isn’t a strategy, it’s expensive guessing.
And as always, colostrum isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix. Some dogs thrive on it, some need a more layered approach depending on how severe their allergies are. But if you’re looking for something that actually addresses the root of seasonal allergy symptoms instead of just covering them up, this is one of my favorite tools to reach for!
