It’s Getting Warmer, and It Might Be Time to Start a Joint Supplement!

The weather is warming up, the days are getting longer, and your dog suddenly thinks they’re in peak athletic condition again. More walks, more hikes, more fetch, more yard zoomies. We love to see it! But with increased activity comes increased stress on the joints, and this is the time of year I start having more conversations about joint support.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that joint supplements are only for senior dogs. They’re not. By the time you’re noticing stiffness, hesitation on stairs, slower rising, or subtle limping, the joint has already started to deteriorate. Cartilage doesn’t regenerate once it’s significantly worn down, and managing pain is very different from protecting the joint structure itself. It is always easier to preserve healthy joints than it is to repair damage after the fact.

When to start depends largely on breed, size, and predisposition. Larger breeds (German Shepherds, I’m talking about you!) are genetically more prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis, and structural stress simply because of their size and growth patterns. For these dogs, starting joint support around 1–2 years of age, once growth plates have closed, is often recommended. They carry more weight, experience greater joint loading, and, statistically, develop orthopedic issues earlier. Getting ahead of inflammation and cartilage breakdown makes a difference in the long term.

Smaller breeds can often wait longer, typically until around 5–6 years old, if they don’t have specific orthopedic risk factors. However, breed still matters. My dachshunds were started on joint supplements at 3 years old. Why? Because they are highly predisposed to spinal issues and IVDD. Waiting until symptoms appear isn’t a strategy I’m comfortable with, given what I know about what they’re genetically prone to. A Chihuahua, on the other hand, could reasonably wait until about 3–4 years old if they’re otherwise healthy. There’s no universal timeline; it’s about understanding the dog in front of you.

Joint wear happens slowly and quietly. Every jump off the couch, every hard stop during fetch, every sprint after a squirrel creates micro-stress within the joint. Over time, cartilage thins and the quality of synovial fluid (the natural lubricant within the joint) declines. Inflammation creeps in gradually. By the time we see outward signs of discomfort, degeneration has already begun.

This is why starting a supplement earlier than you might think is rarely a bad idea. Supporting cartilage integrity, joint lubrication, and inflammatory balance proactively is far more effective than trying to “fix” a problem once it’s advanced. Warmer weather simply increases the urgency because activity levels naturally rise. If your dog is suddenly walking, hiking, swimming, playing harder, or just generally moving more than they did during the winter months, their joints are experiencing more load. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be on a joint supplement year-round; it simply means you may not have noticed they needed one or thought it was "too early" to start.

When I look at joint supplements, I prefer formulas that include glucosamine and chondroitin for cartilage and fluid support, MSM for inflammation modulation, and omega-3 fatty acids for broader anti-inflammatory benefits. Ingredients like green-lipped mussel or collagen are also valuable additions. Dosing matters, quality matters, and consistency matters even more. Joint supplements are not something you give occasionally when your dog looks stiff; they’re meant to be part of a long-term preventative plan.

Ultimately, joint degeneration is progressive. It doesn’t announce itself loudly in the early stages. Starting support earlier than expected isn’t overdoing it; it’s thinking ahead. If your dog is entering a more active season, is a large breed, or is genetically predisposed to orthopedic issues, now is the time to consider it!

Your dog might feel young and unstoppable today. But the goal is to help them feel that way for as many years as possible.
